Kali Uchis and her dreamlike music have filled my playlists for the last six years. Without hesitation, I add each of her songs to my best playlists and wait for the next album to come. Her music creates its own fantasy land with a mix of R&B, reggaeton, pop and more.
If I were new to her music, I would begin with her EP “TO FEEL ALIVE.” It’s a quick listen that only takes 10 minutes, but it’s well worth it. The EP is intimate and sweet. You’re able to understand Uchis through these few personal songs that would eventually kick-start her career.
From her early beginnings, which developed alongside Tyler the Creator, Uchis has stayed in the spotlight and has grown a large following due to her versatility. She might be the perfect artist for anyone looking to switch up their music taste, whether they speak Spanish or not. Her music never falls short of a good feature, either, so you can always count on popular artists making an appearance on her albums.

Rosalia has one of the best voices I have ever heard. I’ve never met a siren, but if at some point I do, I would imagine they would sound like Rosalia when she sings flamenco. Her voice and her music are just magical.
Her debut album, El Mal Querer, was based on a 13th-century story called The Romance of Flamenca. The story revolves around a woman locked in a tower by her lover over his fear of losing her, which isn’t romantic so much as it is seriously messed up. But Rosalia takes the story and turns it into a heartbreaking modern classic.
It’s so easy to get lost in her voice. Her songs “QUE NO SALGA LA LUNA” and “DI MI NOMBRE” are magical to listen to. While not all of the songs from her album depict love (“DE AQUI NO SALES” is a particularly chilling account of an abusive partner), her passion and style pull you in much like the pull of falling in love.

Love has no language, but it does sound more romantic hearing it in Spanish, especially from Ed Maverick. At just 18 years old, Maverick signed a record deal with Universal Music for his melodies, a marriage of Mexican folk and lo-fi. Born Eduardo Hernández Saucedo, Maverick, now 23, is a singer and songwriter from Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico.
In this short documentary called “In Search of Ed Maverick,” he talks about his love for his hometown, Delicias, and his love of its simple, yet fulfilling lifestyle. I could say the same about why I admire his music: its simple melancholy, easiness and depth.
My mom, sister and I would sing to “Ropa De Bazar” in the car, yelling: “De verte manejar el carro de tu papa!” Like the story in the song, of sharing an experience with someone special, the moments listening to his music with the most important people in my life will always remind me of why I adore Maverick.
“El amor es lo que da gasolina a las cosas,” Maverick said in the documentary. He is right. Love fuels all things. “So many incredible things happen from people loving.”

Since childhood, I’ve been a dedicated listener of La Oreja de Van Gogh. Reminiscing about the days when my mom played their albums on CD in the car, and the sheer delight of singing along to their pop melodies on those lengthy drives still fills me with profound joy.
Originating from Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain, this Spanish pop band emerged in 1996, when guitarist Pablo Benegas, bassist Álvaro Fuentes, keyboardist Xabi San Martín, and drummer Haritz Garde united during their college days. Vocalist Amaia Montero’s later addition brought a unique dimension to the band’s musical odyssey through her distinctive vocals.
This band holds a cherished place in our family because the very mention of it invokes sweet childhood memories. The shared happiness of dancing to hits like “Rosas,” “Paris,” or “La Playa” with my mom and siblings is engraved in my heart. The enchanting blend of guitar melodies and Amaia Montero’s distinctive voice captivated my young ears and made this band an extraordinary discovery to my childhood self.
Today, I revisit their tunes not only to relive those childhood moments, but also to embrace the continued journey of their latest releases.
