Students must prove they have existing coverage to avoid the $800-per-quarter cost
Are you a student planning to use DePaul’s student health insurance next year? We’d love to talk to you – please email eschnei1@depaul.edu to share your perspective!
DePaul’s Division of Student Affairs released an update to the student health insurance program on Jan. 30. An email sent to students, faculty and staff detailed updates on the cost and upcoming implementation procedures for the plan.
Set to begin at the start of the Autumn 2024 quarter, all degree seeking students will be automatically enrolled into the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Specific details on how students can opt-out of SHIP have not been provided, but Student Affairs said students will need to prove they have active and comparable health insurance coverage.
During a recent walk around the Loop campus, 14 East journalists spoke to students about DePaul’s new plan. As seen in this short video, every student said they were planning to stay on their family’s health insurance plan. Many said they would stay on their family’s plan until the age of 26 when they will no longer legally be considered a dependent.
Students who do not opt out of SHIP will have the plan’s cost, $800 per quarter, automatically added to their tuition bill. Students will be able to receive care from providers in the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus PPO network.
DePaul’s SHIP is available to both domestic and international undergraduate, graduate, law and ELA students, though international students with a J-1 visa are not eligible.
More information regarding coverage can be found on the Division of Student Affairs website and on this recently released informational flier.
